Variable Voltage vs. Variable Wattage vs. Ohms

Variable voltage, variable wattage, and resistance (ohms) are some of the terminologies that tend to leave many people in confusion when considering buying a mod vape. While variable voltage, variable wattage, and ohms are different technologies used for controlling the power output of vaporizers, understanding these things can give you a perfect vaping experience. 

Variable Versatile Batteries

Electronic cigarettes, E-cigarettes, or e-cigs are battery-powered, handheld devices use to consume flavored nicotine and non-nicotine liquids called e-liquids or e-juice. E-cigs work with a heating system that heats the vape  liquid and converts them to inhalable vapors without producing smoke.

The battery of e-cigarettes is one of the vital parts of the device because it powers the e-cig. These batteries usually come with high capacity in order to perform different functions required to power the device.

2 Options

E-cig batteries come in two options - automatic and manual. It is very similar to the automatic and manual transmissions used in cars to shift gears. For instance, the automatic transmission lets the car decide when to shift gears. It does it automatically for you.

On the other hand, you are solely responsible for changing the gears with the clutch and gas pedals when it comes to a manual transmission.  This will help us to understand the difference between a variable voltage and a variable wattage.

Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries

Depending on the type of vape you have, you will most likely get one with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. They can vary in size but if they are replaceable they are usually 18650 batteries. Other types are 21700 and 20700 cell. The numbers represent the dimensions of the battery. 18650 is 18mm x 65mm and 21700 is 21mm x 70mm.

Variable Voltage

Variable voltage is just like your manual car. It is old school because you are in charge of controlling the power of your vape pen. The actual power output is determined by the interaction between the resistance of the atomizer and the energy going through it.

Variable Wattage

Variable wattage is the real deal and a much friendly feature because it pre-sets the power of your device. With a variable wattage, you just need to tell your device how much power (wattage) you want as power output. The device automatically adjusts the energy flow to produce the precise output you need.

What is Resistance (Ohms)

Resistance measures the opposition to the flow of current in an electronic device. The unit of resistance is Ohms. Electricity will flow more freely when the resistance of the e-cig is lowered. When it is increased, electricity flows slowly.

Using a lower resistance produces more vapors and quality flavors but reduces the battery life of the e-cig.  On the other hand, a higher resistance does not drain the battery but produces fewer vapors.

What is mAh?

A milliampere-hour (mAh) is the amount of power that a battery can store. By checking the mAh of the battery, it is possible to know the durability of the e-cig battery. Batteries with large mAh last longer and are more durable than that with a lower mAh. 

Using the mAh is also a good rule of thumb to check for battery size. Some people like a bigger battery 

Ohms Law

Ohms law states that the electric current flowing through a metallic conductor is directly proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional to its resistance.

Voltage is the multiplication of the current and the resistance. Hence to get current, the voltage will be divided by the resistance. To get the resistance, divide the voltage by the current. This is recommended for those who want to rebuild the atomizers in their vaping devices.  

Batteries

A vape device without a power source is useless. Battery capacities vary among e-cigs. Some have a battery with a lower mAh, and some have larger mAh. There are also vaporizers that use more than one battery to increase the efficiency of the e-cigarette and your overall vaping experience.

Watts

Wattage or watt is simply the measurement of the amount of power consumed by an electronic device.

Volts

The voltage measures the electric potential that flows between two points in a circuit, with one point having a higher charge compared to the other.  

What Is Sub Ohming?

Sub ohming is vaping at a resistance that is lesser than 1 ohm. This gives an intense feeling and helps to produce thick vapors, but it can reduce battery power drastically. This often works best with mechanical mods with no electrical safety switch and highly recommended for experienced users. Doing this without accurate knowledge could lead to a battery explosion or damage.
