Admittedly, it's gotten to the point where its become almost difficult to keep up with all the new innovations creeping their way into the market as of late. It seems like the bubbler just came out. So you can only imagine what our reaction was upon seeing a nectar collector in action.
What's a Nectar Collector or Dab Straw?
To keep things simple, feel free to consider nectar collectors as an extremely easy to use and portable dab rig. A nectar collector condenses an entire dab rig into a handy straw or pipe-like apparatus. It works great in the great outdoors or in more social settings.
The chamber that holds the water inside is spill-proof so you won't have to worry when taking it with you on the go. The entire assembly also comes apart easily for easy cleaning or storage. Depending on the dab straw, can cram the entire thing in your backpack or purse without a sweat.
Nectar collectors, also sometimes referred to as honey straws come in a variety of sizes and shapes. From large, unwieldy instruments to tiny, almost pocket-sized pipes offering even more portability when needed. Other variations made out of less fragile materials also exist such as a silicone nectar collector. These don't have the fragility of glass nectar collectors or their quartz counterparts.
How Does It Work?
Dab rigs use various-sized bowls to accommodate a specific amount of concentrate. Nectar collectors let you prepare pretty much any amount of wax you desire as long as you have a dish large enough to hold it.
Instead of heating a bowl or nail where the dab is normally dipped into, nectar collectors work the other way around. The nectar collector itself is dabbed into the concentrate as you inhale. Nectar collectors usually come with a quartz or titanium tip and which one you use is mostly left to your preference. Quartz is known to produce better basting dabs while titanium is the more durable so you won't have to worry about breaking it in transit.
How to Use a Honey Dab Straw?
To start off, prepare your material on a serving dish. Just like a regular dab rig, take your torch and start heating up the tip of the nectar collector. Make sure you don't get it glowing hot red. Wait around 15 seconds to allow the tip to cool before dabbing or tapping the tip onto your prepared concentrate. If you're using a glass or quartz honey collector, you should be able to see the vapor as it travels from the tip, into the water chamber, then finally up to the mouthpiece.
How to Clean it?
The cleaning process for a honey collector doesn't differ much from how you would normally clean any glass bong or dab rig. Here's a step-by-step how-to on cleaning your nectar collector properly:
1. Disassemble the honey collector and drain the water chamber. Give the externals and internals a good rinse with warm water.
2. For a more thorough cleaning, after rinsing the water collector, submerge it in a
2:1 alcohol/salt solution. For better results use a sealable bag such as a Ziploc to hold the alcohol salt solution as well as the nectar collector. This will let you shake the entire bag giving a much quicker and more thorough cleaning.
3) Rinse and dry with water. That's it!
