One of the most essential smoking accessories is a grinder. The most popular type of grinder is an aluminum herbal grinder. It has all the features needed to get your grind down fine. Regardless if you're smoking, vaping or eating your herbs, a fine grind will help. 

There is no more need for breaking it up with your fingers or even a scissor. The convenience of a grinder is second to none.

Metal grinders are generally small enough to fit in your pocket. They can go up to 100mm in size. Most of the time, they're a cylinder shape but they can come in a sphere or rectangle.

Benefits of Metal Grinders

The importance of a herb grinder falls into the smoke or vapor it produces. Grinding it down really well will help give it an even heat distribution. 

One of the reasons people prefer some types of grinder is because they have a pollen kief-catcher. The bottom piece is where the pollen falls into. When you grind enough, you can collect this pollen and use it on top of your herbs.

Using a grinder has a small upfront cost but it pays off. Grinding your herb down can help you smoke less. Having a nice grind means you can get more from less.

How a Grinder Works?

To use a metal grinder, simply take your dry herbs and place them on the teeth. Close the pieces and start twisting opposite ways. Keep going for about 5-6 turns. Slowly take it apart and see if the grind is sufficient. 

Types of Aluminum Grinders

Although there aren't many different kinds of grinders, the two main types are 2 piece and 4 piece. 

2 Piece

A 2 piece grinder is the most simple way to go about it. Simply use the two pieces to trap your herbs and break it down. 2 pieces are also smaller too so if you don't care about the pollen and just want a good portable aluminum grinder, this will do.

4 Piece

A 4 piece grinder is a bit more advanced. Sometimes they come in 3 pieces too but the main advantage is that you have a kief catcher. This is the pollen of your herbs that fall down into the bottom compartment. Eventually, it fills ups and can be used on top of your dry herbs.

There is often a lower bottom compartment which is used for holding your herbs as storage.

How to Clean Them?

Cleaning metal or aluminum grinders are the easiest. Solid herbs tend to not stick to aluminum as well as other materials. using a simple brush can get the job done. If there is left over gunk, try soaking it in warm water, salt and some isopropyl alcohol.
